Contract II (1995)
Computer, distance sensor, speech electronics, iron grate;
12x10x2"; 5lbs.
Status:
collection of Rene De Rosa
This sculpture measures the viewer's proximity up to ten feet away. A female voice
speaks phrases which correspond to this distance. These phrases are compliments,
declarations of love, admiration and fidelity, spoken almost monotonally. As the
viewer approaches, the piece says "I love you;" "We belong
together;" "You're the best; " etc.
At the closest increment of distance this tactic is abandoned and the piece says
"I wish you were dead." One source for this piece was the Farrah Fawcett
TV movie about the abuse victim who defended her husband for years, but finally set him on
fire while he slept.
This piece has two keyholes for screw or hook hanging. It requires a
120v wall outlet at the floor within six feet, and at least fifteen feet of clear space
directly in front of the piece. The current drain is negligible.
